Cartagena is a beautiful historic city in northern Colombia, facing the Caribbean Sea.

Once a fortified city during the Spanish colonial era, it still preserves its defensive walls and fortresses built to protect against invaders.
Because of this, the old town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and flower-adorned balconies create a picturesque, almost painterly scene.
Meanwhile, the modern district is lined with high-rise buildings and is also popular as a resort destination.

Sightseeing Spot

The cityscape of Cartagena captivates visitors with the contrasting charm of its modern and historic districts.

The old town features cobblestone streets, vibrant buildings, and balconies adorned with flowers, offering a sense of stepping back in time.
In contrast, the modern district is filled with high-rise buildings and exudes a lively, contemporary atmosphere.

I didn’t have enough time to explore the modern side of the city, but if you're staying for a few days, I highly recommend checking it out as well.

At the heart of the old town stands the iconic clock tower, a perfect starting point for sightseeing. A leisurely stroll along the seaside promenade or relaxing at a café is also highly recommended!

Walls of Cartagena

The walls of Cartagena are defensive structures built during the Spanish colonial era to protect the city from foreign invaders.

Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these walls—constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries—still preserve their stunning appearance today.
Walking along the top of the walls offers sweeping views of Cartagena’s cityscape and the sea.

San Felipe Fortress is a landmark of Cartagena, built during the Spanish colonial era as a defensive stronghold.

Perched atop a hill, it offers a prime location with panoramic views of the city and the sea.

Known for its intricate underground tunnels and stone architecture, the fortress is within walking distance from many hotels.
It's a highly recommended spot where you can truly feel the breath of history.

Buena Vida is the perfect restaurant to enjoy fresh seafood in Cartagena.

The raw oysters, in particular, may be smaller than those in Japan, but their flavor is truly beyond expectations.

In a bright and casual atmosphere, you can savor dishes made with locally sourced ingredients.
If you're looking to experience Cartagena’s seafood cuisine, this spot is a must-try!

Bozha Cafe Bar

Bozha Cafe Bar is the perfect spot to enjoy the Cartagena experience.

With its sophisticated interior and warm atmosphere, it's a great place to unwind over cocktails or locally sourced coffee.

It's a popular choice among tourists looking to relax and recharge after a day of sightseeing.
