Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina.

Often called the “Paris of South America,” Buenos Aires boasts elegant European-style architecture and streetscapes.

While retaining the vibrant energy typical of South America, the city exudes a refined, almost European charm—with countless sights to explore!
I hope this blog helps you discover some inspiring destinations for your trip to Buenos Aires.

Sightseeing Spot

Buenos Aires

Once you set foot in this city, you’ll quickly understand why it’s called the “Paris of South America.”

Unlike many other South American cities I’ve visited,
Buenos Aires unfolds with a distinctly European atmosphere that sets it apart.

Even for someone traveling across South America, it felt refreshingly different.

Though the cityscape is undeniably European, traces of South American culture remain strong—
making for a fascinating blend that’s truly worth experiencing.

Mercado de San Telmo

The lively San Telmo Market is a captivating spot filled with local ingredients, antiques, and handcrafted goods.

Beloved not only by tourists but also by locals,
this market offers a close-up experience of Argentine culture.

Plaza de Mayo

Located at the heart of Buenos Aires, Plaza de Mayo is a historic and political landmark. (Mayo means “May” in Spanish) Named to commemorate the revolution on May 25, 1810, the square is surrounded by important buildings, such as the Presidential Palace and the Cabildo, allowing visitors to appreciate the rich history of Buenos Aires.

Obelisco

Just a few minutes’ walk from Plaza de Mayo, the Obelisk stands as a city landmark and symbol of Buenos Aires in the heart of the city. Illuminated at night, it offers visitors a striking view.

Congreso de la Nación Argentina

The Argentine National Congress stands out with its grand European-style architecture,
drawing attention as a central landmark of politics and history.

On certain days, guided tours of the interior are available.
If you have time, it’s well worth joining one to explore the building up close.

El Ateneo

Housed in a renovated historic theater, this is one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world—where the charm of literature and history come together.

Inside, there’s a cozy café where you can enjoy coffee and sweets while diving into a good book.

If you love café hopping, this spot is simply irresistible.

Teatro Colón

The Teatro Colón ranks among the world’s top three opera houses, alongside La Scala in Milan and the Opéra Garnier in Paris.

In terms of size, it’s the second largest opera theater in the world—just behind La Scala in Milan.

You can also take a guided tour of the interior, which I had the chance to join myself!
I highly recommend it—standing inside, you’ll truly feel the grandeur of European architecture.

Buenos Aires is famously known as the birthplace of tango.

Personally, if you’re visiting Buenos Aires, this is an absolute must-see!

It’s easy to experience a tango show by booking through a local tour company.
Most are dinner shows, so you can enjoy a delicious meal and drinks while watching the performance.

Even if you’ve never seen tango live before,
you’re sure to be captivated by the passionate and energetic dancing!

Restaurant

Hierro Parrilla San Telmo

A famous steakhouse located inside the market mentioned above.

When you think of Argentina, you think of Argentine beef.
This restaurant offers classic Argentine grilled dishes at their finest.

Enjoy fresh, juicy cuts of meat cooked to perfection.

Hierro Parrilla Palermo

This is the city-center branch of the restaurant I mentioned earlier.

I liked the first one so much, I ended up visiting this location too...

This branch has a more upscale atmosphere.
Which one you prefer really depends on your taste, but personally,
I found the market location more approachable—and I liked it better!

Sottovoce

This is a slightly upscale Italian restaurant.

The service and food quality were both excellent.

If you’re feeling a bit tired of steak and craving some Italian flavors,
I highly recommend giving this place a try!
